SAYING GOODBYE TO FAST FASHION

SAYING GOODBYE TO FAST FASHION

THE CHANGES I’M MAKING WHILE BUYING MY WARDROBE TO SUPPORT SLOW FASHION – AND WHY

So here’s the thing, fast fashion kinda sucks.

That’s really the simplest way I could put it.

Many of us have felt the thrill of finding great prices in a clearance section or run to a store like Walmart when we suddenly ‘need’ a piece of clothing. Stores like Joe Fresh and Old Navy make online shopping at 2am so tempting even if our closest are full and Influencers love to show off their latest Zara finds.

But have you ever stopped to think about how those clothes come about? Who makes them, where they’re made and why they can sell them so cheap?

#my_body_is  worthy of clothing that looks great and feels great. It’s worthy of clothes that fit and clothes that are comfortable. It’s worthy of clothes that I love and will grow alongside it as it changes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Over this last year I’ve started to become more conscious of the clothing dressing me. It’s one of the hidden blessings of needing a new wardrobe to fit a new body. When dressing a body that I wasn’t sure was permanent or not I didn’t want to be spending a lot of money. But finding clothes that last that are cheap isn’t easy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

At first I turned to only thrifting. Thrifting clothes has always been a great experience for me so switching to purely thrift wasn’t hard. But the size my body is isn’t a size common enough to find a grand selection every time you shop second hand. The shape of my body makes me need to be picky. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So I’ve started researching brands that I feel I CAN give my support to and follow a checklist I’m comfortable with:

  • Canadian made
  • Made with Canadian fabrics
  • Made by workers receiving a livable wage
  • Made in proper work conditions
  • Comfortable

Fast fashion is an easy choice. It’s a choice we’re used to but it isn’t our only choice. Ethical clothing brands exist all around us and are doing an amazing job giving the slow fashion industry a voice.

I’m excited about this journey. It’s already been a few months since I aimlessly shopped fast fashion and it feel great – and there’s always thrift stores when I need it.
