EASY & ADORABLE DIY VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT

Whether you celebrate Valentine’s Day or pretend it doesn’t exist it’s hard to deny that it was a fun holiday as a kid. Mine always included a classroom party, list of chocolate and my favourite part – the exchange of cards! These easy & adorable DIY Valentine’s Day gifts are the perfect card replacement. They save yogurt tubes from landfill, can be filled with an assortment of goodies are are quick to make!

MATERIALS USED:

I didn’t end up buying anything for this project – I raided the craft corner and used what we already had! If your craft corner is empty (or non existent, no judgement) the seasonal aisle of a dollar store would have everything you need. What I did end up using was:

  • IOGO Nano yogurt tubes
  • Glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Construction paper
  • Heart stickers
  • Foam stickers
  • Tissue paper
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Sharpies

The greatest part about this craft is its versatility. You can keep this as simple or as detailed as you’re comfortable with. It’s adaptable for younger kids to make themselves. It’s even personalizable! Some options are:

  • Cover it in Valentine’s Day stickers
  • Create lovebugs
  • Colour them with Sharpie markers
  • Glue pompoms
  • Use red foam stickers
  • Heart shaped gems
  • Glue confetti onto it
  • Write a teacher’s name on it
  • Wrap with pipecleaners
  • Tie ribbon around it
  • Modge Podge tissue paper
  • Cut out hearts from scrap paper and glue
  • Cover with glue and roll in glitter
  • Write love lyrics around it

Once you’re done decorating you get to decide what to fill it with. I would avoid anything liquid (I don’t think they’re super leakproof once that seal has been broken!) and you’ll want to keep allergies in mind if you’re taking them to a daycare or classroom.

FOOD IDEAS:

  • Chocolate chips
  • Goldfish crackers
  • Hershey Kisses
  • Small gummy candies
  • M&Ms
  • Smarties
  • Corn chips
  • Blueberries
  • Roasted chickpeas
  • Gumballs
  • Small marshmallows
  • Dried fruit
  • Grapes
  • Shredded coconut
  • Granola
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Trail mix
  • Pretzel sticks
  • Popcorn
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Cheese puffs
  • Nuts, if allergies aren’t a concern
  • Cinnamon hearts

NON-FOOD IDEAS:

  • Stickers
  • Crayons
  • Small erasers
  • Small pencil crayons
  • Small secondhand toys from Tiny Toy Co or a thrift store
  • Puzzle
  • Hair elastics + clips
  • Money
  • Pins
  • Chalk
  • Marbles
  • Bathtub crayons
  • Lipbalm
  • Jewellery

Whether you’re making them as teacher gifts, creating them to hand out in a classroom or planning to hide them around the house for a Valentine’s Day morning hunt one thing is for sure: they will be loved. Most important: have fun with it! Just like most holidays, it should be about the fun surrounding the making of the gifts and the joy you get from giving them – not what’s inside them.
