CANADIAN THRIFT STORES FOR KIDS YOU CAN SHOP ONLINE

Living in a pandemic may have made our usual thrifting options harder to access – luckily there is a booming market of thrift stores for kids online!

Did you know the textile and fashion industry is the second largest polluter on the planet? We’ve been living through years of fast fashion shopping and dumping without a thought towards what goes into making the products and what happens when we’re quickly bored of them, or they’ve become outgrown.

There’s no denying that thrifting has a long list of benefits. From the thrill of a find to the great environmental impacts it provides, not to mention the money it saves, second hand shopping is an important part of today’s society.

On the flip side shuffling through racks in a thrift store isn’t for everyone. It can be time consuming, there may not be a thrift store within range and you’re not always guaranteed to find what you need.

The solution: online consignment shops.

While some of the online consignment shops on this list may be more expensive than your local Value Village they’re all Canadian small shops who have curated pieces that are clean and quality checked. Thrifting online gives you the option to shop when you want and easily look for what you need.

So here it is – my complete list of Canadian thrift stores for kids you can shop online!

Beeja May is an online kids consignment store based out of Toronto, ON. It was founded but he realization that there is a lack of accessible, easy ways to shop second hand kids clothing. They also want to do their part in leaving the world in a better place in every way they can!

Originally started with just kids clothing, they’ve grown to include many accessories like swaddle blankets too. In their goal to help leave the world a better place Beeja May has also added a small Zero Waste shop section that includes some basics to get you started in a zero waste parenthood lifestyle – all made by small shops.

Outside of the environmental goals of doing good, Beeja May also cares about their community. They’re committed to partnering with local charities who focus on giving back to marginalized groups such as New Mom Project.

We’ve used Beeja May to purchase clothes for the kids and I have nothing but good things to say about them. All the clothes we bought were clean and pre-checked for their quality, the prices were fair and our package arrived in a very timely manor!

iSPY CLOTHING

PHOTOS FROM ISPY CLOTHING

iSpy clothing is based our to Toronto, ON and provides sustainable clothing options for kids. They have a goal of changing the fashion industry and reusing what already exists before buying new.

Their philosophy extends into all areas of their work: they use hangers from retail stores or customers that would normally be thrown out, they prefer email over printed paper and any clothing that cannot be sold or donated is sent away for textile recycling to divert it from landfill.

Outside of shopping piece by piece, iSpy offers the option of purchasing baby bundles, capsule wardrobes and outfit. One of my favourite parts is that they don’t have gendered sections – shop by style, colour, size, etc instead.

LITTLE AND LOVED ONES

PHOTO FROM LITTLE AND LOVED ONES

Little and Loved Ones, based in Grimsby Ontario, is a secondhand store that opened in July of 2021.  The shops founder Kirsten came to the same conclusion many of us have: our children are going through perfectly good clothing too quickly and the cost of constantly buying new is high!

I took a peek through the Little and Loved Ones online shop and found plenty of fun kids clothing at great prices. Their shop is gender neutral so you can shop by size or clothing type. If you’re a Disney fanatic like I am you’ll definitely want to pop to the Character Shop section and find awesome Disney products at deal prices – especially if you’re missing the presence of a Disney Store in Canada! I am also in love with the play clothes condition section to grab play clothes at super cheap prices.

If you’re located in Grimsby be sure to follow along and keep your eyes out for a storefront opening some day!

Little Minimalist, based in Montreal, Quebec is a curated shop of children’s clothes, toys and accessories. They carry both preloved items and new, ethical ones too.

Little Minimalist was created after Tara was frustrated trying to sift through the gendered baby products we usually find in stores – they didn’t know the genders of their kids during their pregnancies. They focus on minimalistic pieces that are ethical, sustainable and high quality.

If shopping sustainable, slow fashion clothing lines is your dream but your wallet struggles to allow it then their preloved section is for you!

LITTLE WHITE SNEAKERS

Little White Sneakers is a secondhand store located in Toronto, Ontario. After watching a pair of little white sneakers be outgrown after only three wears (a fate I’m sure many of us have faced with littles!) and understand the impacts of fast fashion, Little White Sneakers was formed!

Little White Sneakers carries mostly kids products but does have sections of women’s and men’s clothing, too. Their website makes it easy to find what you need by using the filters for size, brand and clothing type.

Little White Sneakers is also partnered with New Circles. New Circles is a GTA based charity that provides low income families with free new or gently used clothing, shoes and accessories. Clothing can be donated to New Circles via Little White Sneakers!

LODE

PHOTOS FROM LODE

Lode is a kids pre-loved store based out of Toronto. Founded by Nyla Obaid, Lode was born in response to the lack of gender inclusive, well made secondhand items that her kids loved.

Being gender inclusive means Lode does not accept any gendered clothing. This doesn’t mean plain basics and no dresses or skirts – it means no clothing that directly specifies a gender. Think, shirts that say ‘girls are awesome’ or ‘boys rule the world’, as an example.

Lode takes the time to make sure each piece they sell is in excellent condition. If a piece has a rip or a stain, they take the time to have someone mend it before listing it as upcycled.

You may also find brand new clothing they’ve rescued from overstock, store closings, etc.

MINI-CYCLE

PHOTOS FROM MINI-CYCLE

Mini-Cycle isn’t your usual thrifting experience, but I’m so excited to talk about it: circular economy for children’s fashion.

Now you’re probably wondering what in the world circular fashion is. Mid-Cycle has three options to shop from: pre-cycle, mid-cycle and re-cycle.

Pre-cycle: selling brand new, durable items from their website.

Mid-cycle: buying back all products purchased from Mini-Cycle at a fair price

Re-cycle: re-selling the products bought back in the mid-cycle. If needed, with repairs first.

This cycle continues until the item is completely worn out and cannot be repaired anymore. Mini-Cycle only carries brands that are proven to be sustainable and durable so that the cycle can be repeated many times.

When products start to show some wear, say a small hole from playing, they repair it. Sometimes with super cute embroidery!

When I scroll Washed + Worn’s website I see so many options I want to add to cart. One thing I love about them is their play wear section: a shopping section of clothing that has minor flaws (think, a stain) that makes it undesirable but still perfectly functional for play!

Any items not accepted are donated a local charity, Made by Momma.
